The most common plant care questions, answered here!

🌿 General Plant Care

Plants are living things—and caring for them is about more than just watering. Below are answers to the most common questions I hear from clients, based on real experience caring for plants in homes, offices, restaurants, and commercial spaces throughout Colorado.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Watering depends on the plant type, pot size, light exposure, season, and even humidity. Overwatering is actually more common than underwatering, especially in homes and offices. When in doubt, it’s better to check the soil and plant health rather than watering on a set schedule.

Water alone doesn’t equal healthy plants. Light, drainage, soil quality, airflow, and consistent care all play a role. A plant can receive plenty of water and still struggle if it’s in the wrong location or environment. This is one of the most common issues I see during plant care visits.

Sometimes—but not always. Natural light varies greatly depending on window direction, distance from the window, season, and time of year. What works in summer may not work in winter, especially in Colorado. Many plants decline slowly due to insufficient light, even when everything else seems “right.”

Signs can include roots growing out of the drainage holes, water running straight through the pot, stunted growth, or soil that dries out very quickly. However, repotting too often—or at the wrong time—can also stress a plant. It’s not always about size; timing and technique matter.

Leaf discoloration can be caused by several factors including watering issues, light stress, temperature changes, pests, or nutrient deficiencies. Yellow or brown leaves are usually a symptom, not the problem itself. Identifying the root cause is key to correcting it without creating new issues.

🐛 Pests & Plant Health

Plant pests are common and treatable—but they’re rarely solved overnight. This section explains why pests happen, how they spread, and what realistic, effective plant care looks like when health issues arise.

Yes—pests are very common, even in well-maintained homes and businesses. They often arrive through new plants, open doors, shared spaces, or seasonal changes. Having pests is not a sign of neglect; how they’re handled is what matters.

Yes. Many common plant pests can be treated using natural, non-toxic methods when applied correctly and consistently. The key is using the right approach for the specific pest and plant type, rather than relying on harsh chemicals or quick fixes.

Pest treatment is a process, not a one-time solution. In most cases, it can take 6–8 weeks of consistent care to fully eliminate pests and prevent reinfestation. Improvement often happens gradually as the plant recovers.

Most pests have life cycles that include eggs, larvae, and adults. A single treatment may reduce visible pests but won’t address all stages at once. Ongoing care ensures pests are treated completely rather than temporarily suppressed.

Yes. Many pests move easily between plants, especially when they’re grouped together. Early detection, isolation when needed, and consistent treatment help prevent spread and protect surrounding plants.

🪴 Professional Plant Care

Professional plant care goes far beyond watering. This section outlines what a care visit includes, how often plants should be serviced, and what consistent, informed care looks like over time.

Each visit focuses on overall plant health, not just watering. Care typically includes assessing plant condition, proper watering, pruning and grooming, pest monitoring, soil checks, and adjusting care based on the season and environment. The goal is long-term plant health, not short-term fixes.

Most plants benefit from consistent care on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly schedule, depending on the space, plant type, and environmental conditions. Regular visits allow small issues to be addressed early—before they become costly or difficult to correct.

No. Perry’s Plants uses natural, non-toxic plant care methods. Treatments are designed to be effective while remaining safe for people, pets, and shared spaces such as offices and restaurants.

Plant care services are available for residential homes, offices, restaurants, retail spaces, and commercial properties. Care plans are customized based on lighting, usage, plant selection, and the needs of each space.

🏡 Residential vs. Commercial Plant Care

Plant care needs vary depending on the space. This section explains how residential and commercial plant care differ, and what to expect in each environment.

Yes. Residential plant care focuses on individual plant health and living environments, while commercial plant care must also account for foot traffic, lighting consistency, safety, and appearance. Care plans are tailored to the space and how it’s used.

Absolutely. Many clients already have plants that need professional care. Each plant is assessed based on its condition, location, and environment, and care is adjusted accordingly to support recovery and long-term health.

Both options are available. One-time visits can be helpful for assessments or resets, while ongoing service plans provide consistent care and prevent recurring issues. Long-term service is recommended for maintaining plant health over time.

Yes. Plant care services are available for offices, restaurants, retail spaces, and multi-unit properties. Service schedules and care plans are customized to align with the needs of each property and its occupants.

❄️ Seasonal & Colorado-Specific Plant Care

Colorado’s climate presents unique challenges for indoor plants. Seasonal changes, dry air, and fluctuating light levels all impact plant health. This section explains how plant care shifts throughout the year and why location matters.

Yes. Winter often brings reduced natural light, drier air, and temperature fluctuations from heating systems. Even healthy plants can slow their growth or show stress during this time, which is completely normal with proper care adjustments.

Colorado’s low humidity can cause plants to dry out faster and experience leaf browning or stress. Consistent monitoring, proper watering, and environmental adjustments help plants adapt and stay healthy year-round.

Absolutely. Plants have different needs throughout the year. Watering frequency, pruning, fertilization, and placement often need to be adjusted seasonally to support plant health and prevent issues before they start.

Yes. Seasonal care helps plants stay balanced and resilient over time. Small adjustments made at the right time of year can prevent larger problems and extend the life and appearance of plants.
